My Ántonia

Widely recognized as Willa Cather's finest book and one of the outstanding novels of American literature, My Ántonia tells of the life of early American pioneers in Nebraska.

Through Jim Burden's endearing, smitten voice, we revisit the remarkable vicissitudes of immigrant life in the Nebraska heartland with all its insistent bonds. Guiding the way are some of literature's most beguiling characters: the Russian brothers plagued by memories of a fateful sleigh ride, Ántonia's desperately homesick father and self-indulgent mother, and the coy Lena Lingard. Holding the pastoral society's heart, of course, is the bewitching, free-spirited Ántonia.

Infused with a gracious passion for the land, My Ántonia is a deeply moving portrait of an entire community and its way of life.

Yarman's diction is very precise and measured. Both the pace and the articulate style make this version an excellent choice for ESL programs. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

There is cause for rejoicing that this beautiful, much loved novel appears in a new audio production. And for distress, since Jeff Cummings was not the right choice to do the honors. MY ANTONIA paints a deep portrait of a pioneer farm community on the Nebraska plains, and especially of its immigrant girls from Denmark, Sweden, and Bohemia, whom the narrator, Jim Burden, especially loves. Cummings lacks a talent for accents, and most of his sound like Dublin by way of the American Deep South. His acting skills fall short of the industry standard. The book itself glows, but partly with a sheen of regret for a missed opportunity. B.G. (c) AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine
