Located just seconds from the winding Tennessee border, the remote mountain settlement of Lost Cove, North Carolina was once described as where the "moonshiner frolics unmolested." Today, Lost Cove is a ghost town accessible mainly to hikers hoping to catch a glimpse of the desolate settlement. In this first historically comprehensive book on Lost Cove, the author paints a portrait of an isolated yet thriving settlement that survived for almost one hundred years. From its founding before the Civil War to the town's ultimate decline, Lost Cove's history is an in-depth account of family life and kinship in isolation. The author explores historically relevant interviews and genealogical findings from railroad documents, old newspaper articles, church records and deeds. Also included are oral histories that provide authentic, conversational accounts from families in the cove.

Lost Cove is a small, remote community situated on the border of Western North Carolina and Tennessee. The area was disputed territory, as both states laid claim to the settlement. The first residents were Civil War veterans searching for peace and stability after the destructive war. The railroad, which the author's ancestors worked for, ran through the mountains surrounding Lost Cove. The Cove's residents were able to venture into nearby towns and barter their goods for other needed items. Besides farming, the moonshine trade aided in making a living; the moonshine was notable enough for people to go out of their way to purchase it. The families that lived in Lost Cove may not have been wealthy, but they were rich in spirit. As years elapsed, the railroad ceased operations to the Cove, and the sawmills closed. Families began to vacate, and the town became a memory. But, there are remnants of what was built over 90-plus years. The well-done research and interviews conducted by the author ensure that Lost Cove is not forgotten. A truly wonderful book.
