"This sparkling novel starts with high energy and unique characters that move from one surprise to another." —Ann Garvin, USA TODAY bestselling author
All it takes is the right book to turn a Book Hater into a Book Lover...
That was what Elliot—the beloved co-owner of Over the Rainbow Bookshop—believed before his untimely passing. He always had the perfect book suggestion for the self-proclaimed Book Hater. Now his grief-ridden business partner, Irma, has agreed to sell the cozy Over the Rainbow to condo developers.
But others won't give up the bookshop without a fight. When Irma breaks the news to her daughters, Bree and Laney, and Elliot's romantic partner, Thom, they are aghast. Over the Rainbow has been Bree and Laney's sanctuary since childhood, and Thom would do anything to preserve Elliot's legacy. Together they conspire to save the bookshop, even if it takes some snooping, gossip and minor sabotage.
Filled with humor, family hijinks and actual reading recommendations, The Book Haters' Book Club is the ideal feel-good read. It's a love letter to everyday heroes—those booksellers and librarians dedicated to putting the right books in the right hands every day.

Anthony (The Kids Are Gonna Ask, 2020) returns with a sparkling novel that finds joy in spite of regret. Irma Bedford has been the owner of Over the Rainbow, a bookshop in small-town Minnesota, for many years. Her business partner, Elliot, has passed away, and Irma is intent on selling the store to a corporate building group. But Elliot's romantic partner, Thom, and Irma's daughters, Laney and Bree, are not going to let the bookstore go easily. Bree has made a career out of her job there, and while Laney is reluctant at first, she warms to Thom and Bree's ideas. The three band together on a grassroots campaign to save the shop. Along the way, all three have revelations about their own life journeys as family secrets are revealed. Elliot also weighs in from beyond the grave, and snippets of his newsletter for "book haters" help solidify his voice. Anthony includes a slew of real recommendations sourced from her own friends, bookstore employees, and librarians, giving readers a chance to head off on their own paths.

The Lyn-Lake neighborhood of Minneapolis nestles a small independent bookstore struggling to survive. Unfortunately, one of the owners, Elliott, has recently died, leaving Irma, his partner, to mop up the financial mess. Bree, Irma's daughter and the bookstore manager, is devastated when her mother, with little notice, announces that she has sold the bookstore to property developers who plan to redevelop the site. Bree's sister, Laney, lives in California where she runs a tire store with her husband, Tuck. On hearing the news, she flies home to Minnesota. After a community outcry, the bookstore is saved, and the redevelopment site is moved across the street. Only then is the truth of Irma's circumstances revealed, and the family is forced to re-evaluate not only the bookstore, but their individual personal circumstances, too. VERDICT Don't be fooled by the title; this is the bookstore's newsletter, designed to inspire reluctant readers. Anthony (The Kids Are Gonna Ask) has created an exuberant love song to the power of books, bookstores, and the durable community that they create. Laugh-out-loud funny, this book will restore hope to all those fearful for the survival of bookstores and libraries.--Penelope J.M. Klein
