A Gautier (1848-1880) de Puerto Rico se le considera como el más alto exponente del post-romanticismo de su país y se le conoce también como El Bécquer puertorriqueño, no sólo por la influencia becqueriana en la métrica sino además en el contenido. Hizo poemas a la amistad, a la patria, al amor y a la muerte. Son conocidos sus poemas Ausencia, Regreso, y La barca.
