Carol Cash Large, longtime friend of Blake Shelton, helped move the award-winning musician to Nashville just two weeks after he graduated high school at the tender age of seventeen and has been with him every step of the way since. In Blake Shelton: Happy Anywhere, she takes you backstage for personal and unique insight into the life of the young singer. From Shelton's work with producer Bobby Braddock, recording his number 1 song "Austin," and performing on the Grand Ole Opry to his record-breaking seventeen consecutive number 1 songs and beyond, she has been right there.

Large shares her favorite stories—from Shelton's time as host/entertainment on Saturday Night Live and his induction into the Grand Ole Opry—but she acknowledges that landing a gig as coach on the NBC hit, The Voice, had the biggest impact on his career. She also delves into Shelton's personal life, relating his penchant for entertaining and bringing smiles to his friends and family as well as his joy at finally finding his soul mate in Gwen Stefani.

With fifty personal photos from the author's collection, anecdotes of a close connection to Blake Shelton, and highlights of a glorious career, Large presents a warm and detailed account of one of country music's biggest stars of all time.

In this "I knew him when" biography, educator Large discusses her friendship with country music star Blake Shelton, whom she has known since he was a youngster in Ada, Oklahoma. When Shelton told Large and her husband, Larry, that he wanted to be a singer, they decided to help him. After Shelton graduated from high school, they moved him to Nashville. Slowly opportunities arose. Shelton met legendary record producer Bobby Braddock; was signed to a label; released his first number-one hit song, "Austin" (followed by even more hits); was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry; and joined the TV singing competition The Voice. Large was there for all of it, as well as major events in Shelton's personal life, including his divorce from singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert and meeting his now-wife Gwen Stefani. Fifty photos from Large's personal collection are included, and Shelton himself wrote the foreword to this very flattering and homespun biography. The book is notably detailed: Large calls out names and places in Ada that only a local would recognize; she even shares the scores from a game of mini golf with Shelton and discloses his usual order at the Cracker Barrel (dumplings with a side of dumplings). And therein lies the book's problem--too many details. VERDICT Avid Shelton fans who like to wallow in minutiae might enjoy this biography, but others might find it a yawn-fest.--Rosellen "Rosy" Brewer
