Fame is a dangerous game.

As her brother lies in a coma after a near-fatal car accident, twenty-two-year-old Grace Brighton climbs the Hollywood Sign to make a desperate wish for his recovery. She loses her footing and plummets to the ground below—only there is no impact. Instead, she finds herself the center of attention at a film studio . . . in 1953 Hollywood. Everyone believes she's Alice Montgomery, a rising star she bears an eerie resemblance to, who disappeared just days earlier.

Grace has no choice but to step into Alice's shoes. Meeting Alice's entourage and noticing not everyone is happy that she is back, Grace begins to suspect that something terrible has happened to the young actress. Afraid Alice's miraculous return has now made her a target, Grace must find out who wants to harm Alice to find her way back to her own time. When she discovers one of the missing starlet's deepest, darkest secrets, Grace finds herself in grave danger—she may die long before she's even been born.

Grace Brighton would do anything for her brother--except audition for a role in his senior film project, an homage to his idol, James Dean. Feeling guilty that she has failed him, especially as he is lying in a coma following a car crash, she sneaks to the foot of the Hollywood sign; then, while climbing it to make a wish for her brother, she slips. Awakening on a 1953 movie set, Grace quickly f igures out that everyone thinks she is Alice Montgomery, a starlet who has been missing for several days, disrupting a film starring the as-yet-unknown James Dean. She also senses that the real Alice is in danger. Befriended by a foley artist determined to be a sf writer, Grace tells him she's time traveling. Stunned, he believes her, and they retrace the days before Alice's disappearance. As she seeks the truth, Grace does the acting job of her life, not only to learn Alice's lines but also to save herself. This is Murgia's first adult novel, and it will appeal to fans of 1950s films and light sf.

In her adult debut, YA author Murgia ("Angel Star" series), spins a genre-bending time-travel tale that melds mystery and romance in glittering Old Hollywood, all while exposing the dark side of fame. After a tragic accident that leaves her brother in a coma in present-day Los Angeles, Grace Brighton climbs the Hollywood sign to make a desperate wish. She slips and falls but never hits the ground. Instead, Grace awakens in 1953 to find herself the talk of Tinsel Town. Everyone believes that she is Alice Montgomery, a starlet who disappeared just days earlier. When those closest to Alice don't seem thrilled at her alleged return, Grace begins to suspect something terrible has happened to her doppelganger. As she uncovers Alice's dark secrets, Grace begins to fear for her own safety and wonders if it's possible for someone to die before they were ever born. This singular story is fleshed out with eccentric supporting characters and a star-crossed romance. VERDICT At once frothy and dark, this book will appeal to mystery and thriller fans who loved TV's Quantum Leap, the "Outlander" series, or the works of Susanna Kearsley. --Lacey Tobias
