Devotees of Sherlock Holmes may find this complex novella a delight as narrated by Clive Hayward, whose enthusiasm seems all-consuming. The plot twists can be overwhelming at times, and the dialogue somewhat unclear. While Hayward's energy is immense, sometimes bordering on blustering, the story does blossom, thanks to his firm voice. To some, the stronger part of the audio experience may be the somewhat incongruous "bonus story"-- Charlotte Perkins Gilman's classic "The Yellow Wallpaper." Here, Alison Larkin embodies the troubled protagonist in a nave and haunting performance. Overall, this production's overall sound quality is not as crystal clear as that of the best audiobooks, but, happily, both narrators are skilled and precise.
