For the first time in her life, Belly isn't going back to Cousins Beach this summer.
Nothing is the same as it was. Her best friend Taylor has lots of plans for them—boat parties and tanning by the pool and new boys to obsess over. But when Jeremiah calls and says that Conrad has disappeared, all roads seem to lead back
to the summer house. Will Belly spend another summer chasing after Conrad, or will she finally let him go?

Almasy reprises the role of Belly in this sequel to THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY, which tells the story of the summer after Belly caught the attention of her longtime crush, Conrad--the summer that everything changed. Almasy matches her tone to Belly's emotional journey after the death of her mother's best friend, Susannah. Almasy begins in hushed tones that build in intensity as the story progresses, mirroring Belly's emotions as she too struggles with Susannah's death. Interspersed chapters are told from the point of view of Susannah's younger son, Jeremiah; Almasy deepens her voice just enough to differentiate him from Belly. While this is mainly Belly's story, Jeremiah's chapters allow Almasy to explore another character. Her portrayal of Jeremiah's happy-go-lucky attitude can be infectious, even when he's struggling with big questions and a secret crush of his own. E.N. (c) AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine -

In this second book of the planned trilogy that began with The Summer I Turned Pretty
, 16-year-old Belly Conklin feels displaced. Unlike years past, she won't be at the beach with her mother's best friend, Susannah, and Susannah's sons, Jeremiah and Conrad. This summer, “I wasn't in Cousins. Conrad and I weren't together, and Susannah was dead.” When Belly learns from Jeremiah that Conrad has disappeared, she immediately agrees to help; their search leads them to the beach house, where Conrad is hiding out. Belly's plaintive voice sometimes makes her sound too young, but Han realistically touches upon the characters' various reactions to grief—Belly's mother becomes withdrawn, Conrad fiercely protects the house (his father wants to sell it), Belly has trouble processing the permanence of loss—as well as Belly's emotional entanglements with the brothers (occasional chapters are told from Jeremiah's perspective, and Belly reflects on her failed romance with Conrad). Though the fate of the summer house is resolved a bit quickly, Belly's difficult relationship with her best friend and her standing with the boys hang in the balance, which should leave readers anxious for the final installment. Ages 12–up.
