A Letter from the Editor

Follow Us into Winter

From the Recipe Box • Food is a connector. Food stills moments in time, re-creates memories, and represents those we love. Scents and flavors stoke nostalgia in a way few other things can. And when we invite others, maybe outside our normal circles, to join us in the kitchen or at the table? That’s how strangers become friends and friends become family. The following pages hold dishes from our recipe box—ones gifted to us by a few of our favorite chefs and food-lovers. As these dishes make their way around the table, yours and ours, their stories come alive again. And every time we give and receive recipes held dear, we’re reminded of all that brings us together.

Bright Idea • LAMPS INFUSE A ROOM WITH FEELING AND LET OUR INNER AESTHETIC SHINE THROUGH.

Mirror, Mirror

Catch the Light • TRIMMINGS THAT shine, shimmer & sparkle OFFER REASONS TO CELEBRATE.

Counting Down • THERE IS JOY IN THE WAITING.

What’s Your Favorite Way to Spend a Snow Day? • Snow, snow, snow. Blanketing fields in white. Dusting tip-tops of evergreens. Upon its arrival, we’ll bundle up for sledding and skiing and snowman-building. Or maybe we’ll watch flurries through frosted windows, sipping cups of cocoa. However we experience winter’s wonder, it’s sure to stick, frozen in our memories. So let’s hold tight to each story. Cast aside Grinchlike fears of soggy boots or shoveling woes. Celebrate with all the cheer and festivity of an Irving Berlin song … The magic of snow. We heard tales and traditions from so many of you (to the tune of hundreds!), making this crystal clear: There’s no day quite like a snow day.

More ’Mallows • BING CROSBY (AND OTHERS) SAID IT BEST: “IT’S A MARSHMALLOW WORLD IN THE WINTER.” BUT LONG BEFORE THEY WERE SUNG ABOUT, MARSHMALLOWS WERE ENJOYED BY THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS AS A DECADENT DESSERT RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY FOR ROYALTY. FAST-FORWARDING TO THE 1800S, FRENCH CANDYMAKERS PUT THEIR OWN SPIN ON THE RECIPE, CREATING AND POPULARIZING A TREAT FOR THE MASSES. TODAY, YOU’LL FIND THESE CLOUDLIKE DELIGHTS ON THE SHELVES OF ANY GROCERY STORE, BUT THE REAL FUN CAN BE FOUND IN MAKING THEM AT HOME. SO PUT ON AN APRON AND SOME HOLIDAY TUNES AS YOU DRESS UP YOUR COCOA, ADD SOME FLUFF TO YOUR HOLIDAY CANDY, OR GIVE SOME ’MALLOWS AWAY AS A FESTIVE TREAT.

Christmas Kept • Gather together, lift the lid, and savor holidays past and present.

A Note from Jo: Just As You Are

On Vast Skies Another Winter Arrives

Après le Froid • AFTER A DAY IN THE COLD, THESE COMFORT FOODS ARE WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN WARMTH.

Hardware Handbook • DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE SMALL STUFF. AFTER ALL, GOOD DESIGN IS IN THE DETAILS.

Tradition is Evergreen • A long-standing family-owned tree farm captures the timeless joy of chopping down your own tree.

Small Gifts with Big Personality • WHAT KIND OF STOCKING STUFFER ARE YOU? IS THE STOCKING THE STAR OF THE SHOW OR A SIMPLE FINALE? DO YOU OPT FOR SILLY OR PRACTICAL GIFTS OR FOR THE FINER THINGS? DO YOU STICK WITH TRADITIONAL FAVORITES, OR DO YOU GO FOR THE UNEXPECTED? HERE’S THE JOY OF GIFTING: THERE’S NO WRONG WAY TO STUFF. WHETHER YOU’RE KEEPING WITH YOUR USUAL METHOD OF MERRIMENT OR YOU’RE ITCHING TO GO OUTSIDE YOUR NORMS, HERE ARE GIFTS TO SPARK JOY—FOR YOU AND THE...
