Big day out in the West Country • The stands at the recent West Country Farming and Machinery Show yielded some gems of new kit while the seminars drew people in keen to learn about alternative fertilisers, fuels and on-farm energy production. Here’s a brief round-up

CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

WEIGHT • A lightweight solution to work in cropped fields in all weather conditions lends itself to scouting operations and research.

LOOKS FAMILIAR • There’s something of a split in robotic developments between machines that are derived from existing tractors, those that look a bit like tractors and those that look nothing like tractors. One advantage of being ‘tractor-like’ is the ability to work in established growing systems for field scale vegetables and cereals and to attach familiar, proven implements.

HARVESTING • One of the last great challenges and yet one of the most urgent – especially in the fruit and vegetable sector which uses increasingly scarce manual labour.

ARBOCULTURE/ORCHARD APPLICATIONS

John Deere 6R150 AutoPowr: Useful but dear Deere • When John Deere revamped its key range of 6R tractors it pushed up the power on its chief four-cylinder, the 6R150, which maxes out at 177hp with the boost engaged. Our test steed proved that this is a handy tractor, but is it worth the money? Read on to find out.

Three tractors in comparison • This is a comparison of three similar hp tractors that have been tested by profi in past magazines

Bobcat L85 pivot-steer loader: Great start • The L85 is Bobcat’s first foray into the world of pivot-steer loaders. And it's a pretty good start, too, as we found out in our all-encompassing practical test.

Pöttinger Jumbo 7400 forage wagon: Extra jumbo • While Pöttinger's moving headboard design is neat, it's something that nearly every other manufacturer now offers. Times, to be blunt, have moved on. So, today, it's the driveline with the power belt that sets the Jumbo 7400 apart, and we've been seeing just how much of a difference this configuration can make.

Massey Ferguson 1840 baler: Little ones with a big heart • In this age of bigger and bigger machines, there is still demand for high-density small square balers. Massey Ferguson offers the 1840 and is adding the larger 1842S. We find out more

BIG BROTHER

Kemper 30R pick-up: Big appetite for larger swaths • A key performance bottleneck for the most powerful foragers in high-yielding grass swaths is the pick-up. This is something the latest Kemper 30R is designed to overcome, with a claimed swath gathering appetite to match the hungriest of foragers.

New Holland Big Baler 1270 Plus Density: A plus for more density •...
